Though Goruden-gai is the largest and best preserved nomiya bar district in Tokyo, Nonbei Yokocho "piss alley" is a surprisingly clean and quiet street close by in Shibuya. Coming here is a bit like transporting into post-war Tokyo from the middle of crowded Shibuya. Sometimes "members-only" and keeping odd hours, try popping your head in and see what happens. Walk through in awe – it’s a cool place – and surprisingly quiet. Some locals love it, many don’t, and it’s definitely not mainstream, but as Japan grows increasingly westernized, Japanese hipsters are running back to neighborhood/hidden/traditional joints.
